America by Rail 2021 Calendar

America by Rail 2021 Calendar

$15.00
More Info

Americans have long had a love affair with trains. During the first half of the twentieth century—the golden age of rail travel—passenger trains offered elegant dining services and sleeping quarters, parlor and club cars, and dome cars that allowed unparalleled views of the surrounding countryside. To lure travelers on board, railroads hired accomplished artists to create posters that celebrated the romance of exploring America by rail. The twelve posters reproduced in this calendar feature speeding locomotives and their scenic destinations.

Imagine a time before GPS, Michelin, and Rand McNally, when the world was a great unknown. What lay beyond the castle walls? Beyond the horizon? Kings, merchants, and mariners needed to know. Enter the cartographers, who turned reports from returning explorers into useful maps for those who would follow. In the great Age of Discovery, from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, these artisans helped Europeans span the globe and connect civilizations. Included in this calendar are a dozen antique map reproductions from the British Library’s vast and complex collection of cartographic material.

Archibald J. Motley Jr. (American, 1891–1981)
Black Belt, 1934

Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood is alive with Jazz Age glam in Archibald Motley’s Black Belt. Born in New Orleans, Motley attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He went on to win awards and fellowships, painted for the Works Progress Administration, and became a university instructor. He was a modernist who looked to the old masters, and a portraitist who painted genre scenes.

Motley sought social change through works that he hoped would speak across racial divides—depicting the diversity of black experiences, portraying intersecting social classes, and drawing from highly recognizable cinematic techniques. Through these, he painted modern American life.

With subjects ranging from fine art, nature, and architecture to humor, the metaphysical, and more, Pomegranate’s interlocking jigsaw puzzles combine stunning images, superb color reproduction, and sturdy construction to delight generations of novice and veteran puzzle solvers alike.

Ashmolean Museum: Chinese Embroidered Hanging with Peacock.

The peacock was emblematic not of glory but of compassion and care, and so it would appear to be in this intricate hanging. What we might expect to be its show-stealing splendour is almost upstaged by the pure-white peonies, lilies and roses all around. The eyes of its furled-up tail, though beautiful, blend into the background as though they were another flower.

Bicycles 2021 Wall Calendar

Bicycles 2021 Wall Calendar

$15.00
More Info

The get-up-and-go-anywhere bicycle dates back centuries, but its popularity blossomed in the late 1800s. Its pleasures were obvious, and perhaps especially welcome to women: no fuel required (beyond human muscular exertion), and no dependence on anyone offering a ride or insisting on companionship. As the automobile grew in popularity, the bicycle lost some of its luster. But today, the bicycle is back, big time. The twelve colorfully designed vintage posters in this calendar are gathered in celebration of its practicality, environmental benefits, and joy-inducing pedal travel.

Quirky to say the least, but really just lovably evil, the Addams Family has warmed our hearts and chilled our bones for nearly ninety years. Their creator, Charles Addams, drew relatable characters content with living on the fringe. Subversive and irreverent, and very nearly “normal,” his cartoon family exudes a certain dark charm. The twelve cartoons in this calendar are classic Addams. Come for the deadpan wit, stay for the strong (if ghoulish) family values. Just beware the trap door. Pomegranate also publishes the books The Addams Family: An Evilution (2010) and Addams’ Apple: The New York Cartoons of Chas Addams (2020).
