Wall Calendars
Imagine a time before GPS, Michelin, and Rand McNally, when the world was a great unknown. What lay beyond the castle walls? Beyond the horizon? Kings, merchants, and mariners needed to know. Enter the cartographers, who turned reports from returning explorers into useful maps for those who would follow. In the great Age of Discovery, from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, these artisans helped Europeans span the globe and connect civilizations. Included in this calendar are a dozen antique map reproductions from the British Library’s vast and complex collection of cartographic material.

Honored here are the achievements of an outstanding group of black men and women, both celebrated and little known, who have made amazing inroads in their fields and significantly affected global culture. These individuals are unique in their attainments, courageous in their accomplishments, and forward thinking in their activism. From George Edwin Taylor, the first black person to run for president, in 1904, to a real-world Rosie the Riveter working on a World War II dive bomber, these men and women have made extraordinarily valuable contributions to the world. A brief biography accompanies the image of each figure, birthdays of other notable people are presented with the months, and milestones in black history mark the days of the year.
The surreal imagery in The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch continues to fascinate viewers five hundred years after its creation. Full of naked figures, fantastical creatures, oversized birds, and giant strawberries, the triptych depicts the Garden of Eden, Earth, and Hell. The center panel illustrates temptations on Earth, particularly the sin of lust. The left panel portrays God with Adam and Eve in paradise; the right panel, the torment of damnation. The twelve images inside this calendar are details from the three panels.

Quirky to say the least, but really just lovably evil, the Addams Family has warmed our hearts and chilled our bones for nearly ninety years. Their creator, Charles Addams, drew relatable characters content with living on the fringe. Subversive and irreverent, and very nearly “normal,” his cartoon family exudes a certain dark charm. The twelve cartoons in this calendar are classic Addams. Come for the deadpan wit, stay for the strong (if ghoulish) family values. Just beware the trap door. Pomegranate also publishes the books The Addams Family: An Evilution (2010) and Addams’ Apple: The New York Cartoons of Chas Addams (2020).

Free admission! Just mind the sickening plants, ferocious bears, and carnivorious plants that might eat your aunt. Edward Gorey’s The Evil Garden has been a classic since it was first published in 1965 (it has even been made into a board game!). Enjoy this calendar’s unsettling stroll through the garden, and please, let us know if you ever find the exit.

Spontaneous, rhythmic energy pulses from the drawings of Daria Hlazatova. Her works tap into a powerful feminine quality—somewhere between dreamy and earth-goddess punk. Swirling starscapes, broiling seas, piercing eyes, and lacy detail all surround a central figure. “My goal is for my work to evoke a feeling or memory,” says Hlazatova, “and offer the space for the viewer to get lost a little, maybe question their emotions.” These twelve drawings from Hlazatova will guide you through 2021.

Hilarity and mild mischief follow B. Kliban’s Cat throughout the year, everywhere from the kitchen sink to the middle of the jungle. With the publication of Cat in 1975, Kliban established himself as one of America’s top cartoonists, pioneering a new genre of humor. Kliban’s family-friendly single-panel cat cartoons ponder the question: are humans actually very catlike, or are cats really rather human? Thanks to this calendar’s twelve cartoons, you’ll be the judge as you float in the pool, picnic at the park, and sail the high seas with Cat.

With wry humor and unconcealed sentiment, Norman Rockwell’s illustrations speak volumes about the human condition and the country he loved. Rockwell created images of an idealized nation peppered with small towns and filled with industrious, down-to-earth folks. His artworks reflected the currents of American life, the way we were, the way we acted, and the way we treated each other. By the 1940s, he was considered a national living treasure. This calendar presents twelve of Rockwell’s iconic artworks from The Saturday Evening Post.

Regardless of her station in life or her choice of reading materials, a reading woman makes an engaging subject. Artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet created elegant artworks on this simple theme. Inspiring quotations from notable women accompany this calendar’s twelve images of a woman reading.
